During experiments extending over a long time at the impression of

pressure in expanding ductility and in extending the area of strain-
hardening in metal, my curiosity grew in the topic for its personal sake.
Many experiments have been hence made with the particular goal of
understanding higher the character of either the phenomena of fracture less than
conditions of excessive pressure and the phenomena of the huge plastic movement
which frequently precedes such fractures. A quantity of those investigations

Activated charcoal prepared as described under the laboratory method is again required. Procedure 1. 10 g or 4 ml of soil are placed in a shaking bottle together with 50 ml of Morgan's reagent. 2. T h e bottle is stoppered and shaken intermittently for 5 min. 3. T h e soil suspension is filtered and the filtrate cleared by filtering through a second filter paper which contains a small spatula full of activated charcoal. 4. If necessary the filtrate is again treated with charcoal —a crystal-clear solution is essential.

Normal potassium permanganate is now run into the tube from a burette until a permanent pink colour is obtained; this oxidizes the oxalate radical to carbon dioxide and water. 6. One or two drops of hydrogen peroxide are added until the solution turns colourless; this breaks down the excess potassium permanganate. 7. T h e solution is now washed into a 25-ml volumetric flask, made u p to the mark with distilled water, and well shaken. 8. Calcium is determined on the flame photometer with zero set with 0*2 normal hydrochloric acid and 100 set with 50 ppm calcium.
