The particle size obviously decreased with an increase in the NaHCO3 solution concentration. It was also confirmed that the particle size was decreased with an increment of reaction temperature. These results implied that the formation of Ce2(CO3)3・8H2O in the solution was a nucleation rate controlled reaction. Figure 5 shows the UV-Vis transmittance spectra of the thin films of the plate-like CeO2 samples synthesized in different concentrations of NaHCO3 aqueous solutions. The UV-shielding ability might be expressed by the transparency of UV light range 200-400nm.

The key property to tailorable xerogels/aerogels is the porosity – a high porous structure results in very low thermal conductivity and density. To make these materials competitive with current materials for insulation in Space, the following requirements must be met: working pressure – 10-103 Pa, working temperature – -150-500 ºC, density – 10-100 kg/m3, thermal conductivity – 3-16 mW/(m K) and moderate flexibility. If the 42 12th INTERNATIONAL CERAMICS CONGRESS PART B application involves insulation of electrical/electronic devices, it is also required a material with high hydrophobicity.
